Writer – Playwright – Cannot Save You From The Robot Apocalypse

Instead of writing this blog post, I spent the better part of my evening writing the first draft of my submission for the HamilTEN Festival. This wasn’t a bad thing of course,  I was writing something I desperately needed to write (THE SUBMISSION PERIOD ENDS DECEMBER 18th!!!) but while writing my script it made me think of my writing in general, or more so how I write. I’ve mentioned before that my family is one that loves theatre and how we try to see a production at least once a year, but usually more. We already saw The Phantom of the Opera in Toronto earlier this year, and our next big musical was The Rocky Horror Show at Stratford. I can’t remember when we found out that Rocky Horror was coming, only that we were surprised it was. The Stratford Festival has a pretty high reputation for shows, focusing a lot on Shakespeare (obviously) and more classic plays and musicals. They still do modern shows and productions, but it’s a more professional quality, a higher caliber, so seeing Rocky Horror as one of the musicals for the season was odd. Because it’s Rocky Horror, and that’s not exactly high theatre. Continue reading

Somehow it’s almost November, and that means it’s almost time for NaNoWriMo!

For my non-writing readers out there, NaNoWriMo (a shortened form of National Novel Writing Month) is an unofficial event for writers that takes place during the month of November. The main goal of NaNoWriMo is for writers to write a novel in a month, using the definition of a novel as being 50,000 words meaning writers should aim for a word count goal of 1,667 words per day to finish on time. There are no official rules, including word count goals or how much you should write per day, many writers aim for a higher overall word count for their novel and daily goal, since 50,000 words is on the smaller ends of novels. The main goal of the event is to get people writing and to push writers into finishing a piece of work in a month. There are prizes of sorts, like a reduced price on the writing program Scrivener, and other writing programs, but otherwise NaNoWriMo is a very relaxed event in which writers can work as hard (or not at all) on their project. Anyone can participate, there is no entry fee and no one ever has to read your work if you don’t want them too, it’s really just an exercise and push into writing and completing something. A few weeks ago I started watching Insatiable with much trepidation after a friend’s recommendation. After all, I’d heard about the criticisms, how it was offensive to “fat”, LGTBQ*, skinny, and just people as a whole. I hadn’t watched it yet, but because of the huge negative backlash online I didn’t even think about watching it until my friend did and told me that she loved it. I trust this friend a lot so if she was telling me that this show was good and that I would enjoy it, I knew I had to give it a try despite the critic’s warnings. Continue reading

So a few weeks ago I made a promise.

You probably remember my blog post about my sister getting sick, my fear, and rushing to the ER to be with her. The day after that blog post was published; I had to leave work early with her to go to the ER again because a similar episode of shortness of breath was happening. We had to be safe, but that was a week of immense stress and fear as we tried to figure out what was wrong with her. She was still coughing up blood, she was still sick, she was still losing her voice, and we still had no answers. Continue reading

I’m tired, which isn’t interesting, but it’s the truth.

The past week has been crazy, most stores have their most hellish week (or month) in December for Christmas, but the farm I work on has Thanksgiving. And it makes sense, it’s an apple for so obviously everyone wants apples and pies and all other bakery and farm goods for Thanksgiving. And it’s not like we don’t get busy at Christmas time, we do, it’s just a different kind of busy. A slower kind of build rather than the sudden hit of Thanksgiving. People know when Christmas is, but people seem to forget about Thanksgiving until right before it happens, and then it’s a rush of shopping for the food that will make their meals perfect. If you’ve been following my book blog or bookstagram, then you’ll know I’ve been pretty excited for the release of V.E. Schwab’s newest novel Vengeful. It’s a sequel to her novel Vicious which was published five years ago, though I only read it this year. I really haven’t read Schwab for long, only since last year when I fell in love with her Shades of Magic series (which if you love magic and Harry Potter, or just Fantasy or books in general you should DEFINITELY read) and quickly started reading everything by her. I still have a lot to go, Vengeful is her fourteenth book and she still has a ton more of stories planned in the future, but for now I’m focusing on Vengeful. Continue reading

I’ve been feeling kind of stuck lately.

It has to do with my writing, obviously, because a lot of what I write on here is about that. Because until the last week of August I was off for four months, and obviously I wrote a lot because I finally had a lot of time to do it. But I had this story in my head where I’d actually finish something, have something ready to fine tune and polish off. But the story in my head is better than the one in reality. Continue reading

This is important.

My sister texts me this while I’m at work but it takes me ten minutes to see it. When I check I notice that she’s said the same thing in a Facebook message with no more clarification. Continue reading
